The National Council on Privatisation headed by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, on Thursday, approved the commercialisation of the Federal Housing Authority.
The Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of the council's meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Umar was joined at the press briefing by the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Yerima Ngama, and the acting Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Mr. Benjamin Dikki.
Umar said the decision to commercialise the authority was borne out of government's desire to address the huge housing deficit in the country. He said a steering committee to be headed by the Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development, Ms. Ama Pepple, had been set up to work out the modalities.
"The council deliberated and approved the commercialisation of the Federal Housing Authority to address the huge housing deficit. Similarly, a steering committee has been set up to work out the details of this. The committee is to be headed by the Minister of, Lands, Housing and Urban Development," he said.
